Thanks for a great semester (my very first class at HCC Spring Branch, which I shall remember fondly). I wish you all success, not only in your English learning, but in your lives!

Update on Toye

I spoke with Toye this afternoon and he told me what happened. Two people knocked on his door and tried to rob him. He was shot in the lower leg (his calf). His wound is expected to heal. Right now he needs crutches to walk but he is going to be okay, G-d willing.

Good student that he is, he told me that he plans to be in class to take the final exam on Tuesday!

Musical Lesson #12: WISH

"I Wish It Would Rain," by Phil Collins (future wish)

http://www.mtv.com/videos/phil-collins/58766/i-wish-it-would-rain-down.jhtml

You know I never meant to see you again
and I only passed by as a friend
All this time I stayed out of sight
I started wondering why

Now I, I wish it would rain down, down on me
Yes I wish it would rain, rain down on me now

You said you didn't need me in your life
I guess you were right
Well I never meant to cause you no pain
But it looks like I did it again

Now I, I wish ....

Though your hurt is gone, mines hanging on, inside
And I know it's eating me through every night and day
I'm just waiting on your sign

'Cause I know, I know I never meant to cause you no pain
And I realize I let you down
But I know in my heart of heart of hearts
I know I'm never gonna hold you again

Introducton to Adjective Clauses

Part I: FORM

Adjective clauses (a.k.a. relative clauses) are dependent clauses which follow closely the noun which they modify. They are dependent on the noun. They cannot exist alone.

Adjective clauses begin with a special word, called a relative pronoun (a.k.a. adjective clause pronoun). The relative pronouns introduce the relative clause.

The relative pronouns are:

who/whom/that (for people))
which/that (for things)
whose + noun (for possessions of people or things)
where (for places)
when (for time)

To form a relative clause, the formula is:
relative pronoun + S + V

Part II: Function

Adjective clause pronouns (a.k.a. relative pronouns) can either be used as the subject of the relative clause or the object of the verb of the clause, as demonstrated below:

1. Subject relative clause

Two simple sentences:
I thanked the woman.
She helped me.

One complex sentence:
I thanked the woman WHO/THAT helped me.

She (the woman) is the subject of the adjective clause.
This is called a subject relative clause.

*In a subject relative clause, the relative pronoun functions as both the relative pronoun AND the subject.

Here is another example:

The book is mine.
It is on the table.

The book WHICH/THAT is on the table is mine.
It (the book) is the subject of the relative clause.

So this is also a subject relative clause.

*Again: In a subject relative clause, the relative pronoun functions as both the relative pronoun AND the subject.

2. Object relative clause

Two simple sentences:
She is the woman.
I thanked her.

One complex sentence:
She is the woman WHO/WHOM/THAT/0 I thanked.

The woman (her) is the OBJECT of the second sentence.
This is called an object relative clause.

Another example:

Two simple sentences:
The movie wasn't very good.
We saw it last night.

One complex sentence:
The movie THAT/WHICH/0 we saw last night wasn't very good.

It (the movie) is the OBJECT of the second sentence, making this an object relative clause.

3. Relative pronoun as the object of the preposition (object clause)

Two simple sentences:
She is the woman.
I told you about her.

One complex sentence:
She is the woman ABOUT WHOM I told you. (Formal)
She is the woman WHO/WHOM/THAT/0  I told you ABOUT.

Two simple sentences:
The music was good.
We listened to it last night.

One complex sentence:
The music TO WHICH we listened last night was good. (Formal)
The music WHICH/THAT/0 we listened TO last night was good.

Musical lesson #10: Adjective Clause (Object clause)

"Somebody That I Used To Know," by Gotye
Noun clause
Antecedent (noun which gets modified)
Adjective clause  (blue highlight and  green highlight are adjective clauses because I can't seem to fix it!)

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache [that] I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

[Kimbra:]
Now and then I think of all the times (that)  you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
But I don't want to live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know

[Gotye:]

Musical Lesson #9: Adjective Clause (subject clause)

"I Wanna Dance with Somebody Who Loves Me," by Whitney Houston

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KhhY9iwn-w

antecedent (noun which gets modified)
adjective clause

Clock strikes upon the hour
And the sun begins to fade
Still enough time to figure out
How to chase my blues away
I've done alright up till now
It's the light of day that shows me how
And when the night falls the loneliness calls

Chorus:
Oh I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
Oh I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me

I've been in love and lost my senses
Spinning through the town
Sooner or later the fever ends
And I wind up feeling down
I need a man who'll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last
So when the night falls
My lonely heart calls

Chorus:
Oh I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat with somebody
Yeah I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me
Oh I wanna dance with somebody
I wanna feel the heat
Yeah I wanna dance with somebody
With somebody who loves me

Somebody who somebody who
Somebody who loves me
Somebody who somebody who
To hold me in his arms oh
I need a man who'll take a chance
On a love that burns hot enough to last
So when the night falls
My lonely heart calls.

Grammar #21: Quoted and Reported Speech (due Wednesday)

Part 1:
Watch the following video.

http://www.schooltube.com/video/8d94448e0ba3a3f756b9/

Write 3 sentences that you hear in quoted speech. There are many ways to do this. Please vary your style and word choice to make it interesting. In other words, do not write all of the quotes in the same format.

For instance,
"I heard you the first time," Ricky said to Lucy, "but what language is it?"

Part 2:
Reply to your own comment. WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO  is to rewrite your original sentence in reported (indirect) speech.

For instance,
Ricky told Lucy that he had heard her the first time but that he didn't know what language it was.

A "blind date" is when you go on a date with someone without having seen them before that night.

Write down three things you want to find out about that person using noun clauses.

Musical Lesson #6: Noun Clauses with ? or THAT

Adele:  "Someone Like You"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qemWRToNYJY

I heard that you're settled down
That you found a girl and you're married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn't give to you

Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back or hide from the light
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me, it isn't over

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged,
I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

You know how the time flies
Only yesterday was the time of our lives
We were born and raised in a summer haze
Bound by the surprise of our glory days
I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me, it isn't over yet

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged,
I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead, yeah
Nothing compares, no worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes, they're memories made
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you
Don't forget me, I begged,
I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

Never mind, I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you, too
Don't forget me, I begged,
I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

Grammar #20: Noun Clauses

Here is a chance for you to ask me a personal question, but you have to use a noun clause.

You can start it like this:
Holly, I'd like to know what your middle name is.

Or...
Holly, could you tell me what your middle name is?

Or...
I'm interested in knowing what your middle name is.

Or...
if you have another way to ask the question using a noun clause, TERRIFIC.

I'm not sure WHICH QUESTIONS I'LL ANSWER yet. Let's see what you come up with!

Ask me three different questions.

You may not repeat questions that have already been asked.

Grammar #17: Be supposed to (due Sunday)

(Be) supposed to means the same as (be) expected to, both of which are passive. This means that somebody else is supposing or expecting something.

Some expectations for our class:
1. Students are supposed to come on time. In other words, students are expected to come on time.
Who expects that? The teacher. The school. The administration. The HCC culture.

2. Students are supposed to pay attention in class. In other words, students are expected to pay attention in class.
Who expects that? The teacher. The school. The other students. Everybody.

3. Students are NOT supposed to sleep in class. In other words, students are expected to stay awake in class. TAN, ANH, TOYE, GHAITH, ETC...
Who expects that? I think you know the answer to this question.

4. Students are supposed to do their own work on exams. In other words students are NOT supposed to cheat.
Who expects that? I think you know the answer to this question.

5. Students are supposed to speak English in class. In other words, students are NOT supposed to speak other languages. ROSAIDA, XIMENA, ITZEL, GUSTAVO...

If you understand this lesson, then tell me three more expectations that either the teacher or the students are supposed to meet in class.

If you do not understand this lesson, write "I do not understand this lesson."

Comparisons with AS

Today in class we compared doing homework with paying attention in class. Here is what some of the students said:

1. Julio: “Doing homework isn’t quite as important as paying attention in class.”
(paying attention is a little more important)

2. Fanny disagreed with Julio: “Doing homework is JUST as important as paying attention in class.”
(paying attention and doing homework are equal—use “just” for emphasis).

3. Tan said: "Paying attention in class isn’t as important as doing homework."
(doing homework is more important)

4. Thoai emphasized Tan's point even further: "Paying attention in class isn’t nearly as important as doing homework."
(doing homework is much more important)

5. The others said: "Paying attention in class isn’t quite as important as doing homework."
(doing homework is a little more important)
