    1. Why the Restaurant Failure?

The first reason that makes the restaurant failed is Tom didn't have financial planning. He wanted to build his restaurant at a great location without thinking about the high price of rent. When Tom started building his restaurant, he also spent a lot of money to renovate. Since he wanted to open restaurant quickly, he overpaid with workers. That is a cause made him didn’t have enough circulating fund.

The lack of advertising is another reason that made his restaurant failed. When he opened his restaurant; he didn’t have enough money for advertising that made the customers didn’t know his restaurant. As a result, it made his restaurant didn’t have profit.

  2. There are two main reasons the Undergrad Grill failed.

The first factor in the failure of Undergrad Grill is that Tom did not make a non-reasonable budget plan. The role of Budget in startups or mature businesses is the same as blood for body. A good budget plan can all parts run well; otherwise, there will be a mess. There are five elements of a restaurant: location, food, advertisement, service and decoration. Their importance is listed in descending order. When making the budget, we should make sure we have enough money pay for the more important aspects. Obviously, Tom didn’t make the expense in control. He overpaid for the decoration. Actually, the cost of decoration has the biggest room to adjust, and has less influence in result. The chain reactions were that he could not afford professional cooks; he did not have enough money to do necessary advertisement.

In addition to budget problem, Tom ignored the importance of professional cooks. That is another reason of the failure. Fine decoration can’t make customers buy more dishes. Good advertisement can attract new customers, but cannot retain customers. On the contrary, delicious food not only retains, but also attracts more and more customers. Professional cooks are the core competition and assets in a restaurant. There is two common occasions. The first one is that when we suggest or decide which restaurant we go, we always mention that I know xxx restaurant has xx food that is very delicious. Another one is that: when we have a meal in a restaurant that we often drop in, as soon as we found the flavor is different, the first question we would ask is whether the cook is changed or not? Thus, it can be seen that people is very sensitive to the flavor of food, and food is the tag of a restaurant. Tom hired non-professional cooks to make food. His behavior doesn’t respect customers and his business. Although you are not intended to make your restaurant to be Michelin Restaurant, you would better to pay more attention on the flavor and hire professional cooks. It is worthy and will pay back you more.

    Ps:
Dear Holly, I have two questions about the name of the restaurant “Undergrad Grill”.
First, I think “Undergrad” is not a good meaning because all students hope they could graduate.
Second, I don’t think it’s a good idea to name a negative meaning for a restaurant.
Would you please share your opinions in American culture? Thank you.

    1. Undergrad means the first 4 years of college or university. Your Bachelor's is your undergraduate degree. You get a Master's or Doctorate when you are a grad student (short for graduate student).

So there is nothing negative about the word Undergrad and its not a bad name for a restaurant on a college campus.

      Good question!

  3. There are two main reasons the Undergrad Grill failed.
The first factor in the failure of the Undergrad Grill is he couldn't set professional cooks. To a restaurant, taste is the most important. If the food is not delicious enough, the customers will not come to the restaurant again. The students he hired didn't have a professional cooking training, so they couldn't cook wonderful food at all. However, the other restaurants around the Undergrad Grill are not only so many but also more experienced. Facing such an intense competition, it's possible to fail the business if he doesn't improve the taste of the food in his restaurant.
The high price of food on the menu is the second main reason in the failure of the Undergrad Grill. Most customers are the students of university nearby. Students didn't want to have dinner with a lot of money. They preferred to more economical and convenient food because it can save their money and time. The price of the Undergrad Grill is more higher than other similar restaurants. Most students would rather select a cheaper one after their comparison.

  4. There are two main reasons the Undergrad Grill failed.

The first reason the Undergrad Grill Failed is that Tom didn't have a financial plan. He want to build his restaurant in a great location and where the rent is very high for him. As the building need renovations and some paintings. He spent a lot of money by overpaid the workers to finish the work soon so he can open his restaurant quick. Now when he open the restaurant he couldn't do that much advertising as he spent a lot of money. He didn't have enough money to get a professional chef, so he just hired two students to do the cooking. This is the reasons why he couldn't have a budget plan.

The second reason why the Undergrad Grill failed is because of the high price. AS he spent all his money so he increase the price of the food. Students won't spend a lot of money just on food. They won't buy food which are not well cook and prepared and is being cooked by students. Now on the menu he put different kind of menu. he should put some other kinds so the students could come and try. He cannot cook Chinese food as beside him there is a Chinese restaurant which is more better than him. The is cheaper and well cook.

  5. The first cause of the Undergrad grill's failure is policy of credit card is not available, and this is a big mistake because ninety per cent of people paid with credit card at the restaurant. For example, If somebody do not have cash "what the person is going to do" The answer is simple the person will go to another restaurant.
The second cause of the Undergrad Grill' failure are the prices, it is too much for a lemonade $ 4.00. The students do not have enough money to spend in food, also They are not offer any combo like hamburger, fry and drink for 6.00, or something like that. and the students are not ready to spent 20.00 in regular lunch, reality the prices are too high.

  6. The first factor in the failure of Undergrad Grill is the menu. All the foods in the menu of this restaurant have already taken for a special dish from others restaurant. The restaurant doesn't have any special dish for its owns. If the people want to eat pork fried rice, they will go to Chinese restaurant because that is special dish of Chinese restaurant. Undergrad Grill will compete to each other by the price and the quality of the food. The price of this restaurant is higher compare to other restaurant that has good food and acceptable price to eat.
Secondly, Tom had not calculated his budget before he started to open restaurant.Tom spent too much money for remodeling and painting the restaurant. In addition, he wanted to get it done as soon as possible, so he had paid more for the workers. When it is the time for him to open the restaurant, he can't affords for the advertise to bring in the customers. If the new restaurant opened and has no profit, he will not able to pay the rent and others bills for the restaurant.

  7. The first reason the Undergrad Grill failed is cash only. The people don’t like carrying money with them. Sometime the order depend the money with you, so that the people may change the restraint. The store in present time now they are rely in both cash and credit card because the credit card can’t prevent you from buying, reverse the cash when you want contraption and you don’t have the value of money will not be able to buy what you want.

The second reason the Undergrad Grill failed is no take out. It doesn’t give full freedom to the customer and take right from the customer’s rights. The people like to eat diversity. Most of people like to take the out especially if they have kids because the kids love to play. Some people are busy and they like to order and take requests eating with them especially if they want a sandwich.

  8. The firsr factor in the failure of the restaurant is Higgins spent a lot of money for renovating his building. It caused the lack of budget. Therefor when he opened his restaurant, he hired students to do the cooking instead of expensive proffessional cooks. The taste of foods must be aweful can not compete with the other restaurants.

The secund reason the failure of the restaurant is his restaurant didn't accept credit cards. Most of students usually have credit cards more than cash, so he had to accept the credit card system. Many students who don't have cash, they would better go to the other restaurants.

  9. There are two main reasons why the Undergrad Grill failed. The first reason in the failure of the undergrad grill is the food. In a restaurant, food's taste is most important. Tom Higgins hired students to do the cooking, they are not professional cooker, they can't cook delicious for customers. And there are too many find food on menu, it does not have its own characteristics to attract customers, and that is why the restaurant failed.
The second reason is close too early. A lot of restaurants poen form 11 A.M. to 10 P.M. In my experience, many restaurants always busy on 7 to 9, but the undergrad grill close on 8 pm. Customers go to restaurants to eat they want to enjoy food, If customers go to undergrad grill to eat on 7 pm, they won't have time to enjoy food. Because they tell customers the restaurants close on 8 pm,that is mean: this restaurant will be closed, you have to finish it quickly. Then customers won't happy, next time they will go to others restaurants.

  10. There two main reason the Undergrad Grill failed.

The firs reason the Undergrad Grill failed is, they didn't prepare carefully. In particular, Tom Higgins didn't have enough money to do much advertising and hired qualify workers. Advertising is one of the most important step when the time came to open a restaurant. Also, qualify workers is a crucial step to be successful with a restaurant.

The second reason the Undergrad Grill failed is problems with the menu. First, High food price. They need to start with lower food price. second, they do not accept credit cards or checks. If they want to be success, they need to allowed credit cards this is essential to keep the costumers comfortable. third, they do not have to go orders. Take out food makes costumers have more choices to consume their food.

  11. There are two reason the undergrad Grill Failed .

The first reason the undergrad Grill failed is it doesn't have a good shef. A shef is the most important part of the nature of the restaurant. When the people wants to eat the last thing that the people wants to expect or listening for other people that the food is bad. for example if someone go to a expensive restaurant like ceviche in MIami that place always is full because don't matter that expensive that the restaurant is the most important is the chef and the way to coking over there or when you go to some place that is not to fancy but the food is delicious.

The second reason that undergrad grill failed is it only receive cash this is a problem because in America the most of the people used debit or credit card because is the easily for to buy anything and maintained your finance with more control.
